Suicide Prevention and Help

Exposure to suicide is a major risk factor for us to experience anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation and later potentially develop PTSD. (See: Cerel et al. 2016) These deaths impact all of us, because we all can identify our life as being the next at risk and/or can probably name a coworker whose safety we fear for. No matter how the media portrays this - it’s workplace stress, and now workplace violence. Below are a set of resources for helping different people through these times.

Hotlines/Textlines

  • The 988 Lifeline: call, text, or chat the 988 lifeline. What to Expect at 988 Please note that police may be involved in deescalation interventions.
  • For Vets, there is the Veteran Crisis Hotline. Please note this hotline uses the 988 network; police may be involved in deescalation interventions.
  • For STEM folks and marginalized identities, Thrive Lifeline is non-carceral* suicide intervention text line.

** Non-carceral means providing support without reliance on police or forced hospitalization. Check out* https://dontcallthepolice.com/oklahoma-city/ as an example
